The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) defeated The Usos (Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso) to become the new WWE Smackdown Tag Team champions to begin the WWE Battleground pay-per-view at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia. Shinsuke Nakamura then defeated Baron Corbin via disqualification.

Natalya escaped the five-way elimination match to become the No. 1 contender to Naomi’s WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion. She defeated Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Lana and Tamina in the match.

Kevin Owens defeated AJ Styles to become the WWE United States champion for the third-time in his career. Earlier this month, Styles defeated Owens at a WWE Live show at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

In the Flag Match, John Cena in his first pay-per-view since becoming a “free agent” defeated Rusev. Cena won the event in the Birthplace of America. This match was set up after Cena returned on Independence Day, July 4.

Sami Zayn defeated Mike Kanellis. Zayn evened the series with Kanellis, who is the husband of Maria Kanellis.

Then, in the main event, Jinder Mahal retained his WWE Championship over Randy Orton in the Punjabi Prison match. Mahal needed help from The Great Khali in his return to the company for the first-time since November 2014.
