J.J. Watt, the Houston Texans star, has organized an online fundraiser through the YouCaring site to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
He announced the campaign in the Twitter video (seen below) as the Houston area has been devastated by the Category 4 hurricane. It’s the first Category 4 hurricane to hit the United States since Hurricane Charley in 2004.
“I’m sitting here watching the news, checking the internet and seeing everything that’s going on with Hurricane Harvey and the damage it’s causing back home,” Watt says in the video. “It’s very difficult. It’s very difficult not only because we have family and friends back there, some guys have young kids, some guys have wives and families.
“That’s our city. It’s very tough to watch our city get hit by such a bad storm and not be there to help, not be there to help with the recovery, not be there to help with the process. It’s very tough so what I do want to do is start a fundraiser.”
In the YouCaring story, he wrote, “Hurricane Harvey has taken a catastrophic toll on our great city, while leaving many stranded and in need of assistance. We must come together and collectively help rebuild the aspects of our community members lives that were damaged or lost. Any donation that you can spare, no matter how large or small, is greatly appreciated. We will come out of this stronger than ever. We are Texans.”
