Brandon Phillips dealt to the Angels

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have acquired second baseman Brandon Phillips. He had to waive his no-trade clause to get the trade with the Atlanta Braves to go through.

In exchange, the Braves received catcher Tony Sanchez in the deal. The Angels also received cash considerations in the package.

This is the second deal that the Angels made on Thursday as they continue their playoff push. The team also acquired Justin Upton in a trade with the Detroit Tigers.

Phillips was scratched from the Braves game an hour before the first pitch with the Chicago Cubs. In addition, while he changes teams, he’s about to get paid, as he’ll receive a $500,000 bonus.

The 36-year-old was acquired by the Braves earlier this year in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds.

During his time in Atlanta, while he was normally a second baseman, as also played third base. He has played in 25 games as a third baseman this year, the most he has played in another position outside of second base.

The Angels, going into Thursday, were just 1.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins for the last Wild Card spot. Now, the Angels are hoping with these additions, they’ll be able to challenge the Twins in the coming weeks for the final spot.

With the Braves, Phillips had a .255 batting average with 11 home runs and 52 RBIs in 120 games.

Sanchez has not played in the Major Leagues since 2015 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In his last season, he appeared in 3 games. He had a .375 batting average with three hits.
