Casey Goff did not get the result he was looking for in his first game, as the TCNJ head football coach. He was named the head coach in early July.
The Lions lost 38-24 on Friday night at Lions Stadium to the FDU-Florham Devils. TCNJ has not won a season-opener since the 2011 season.
Goff was hired by the school as the permanent head coach following a national search. He replaces Rocky Hager, who suffered as the interim head coach last season. Hager now serves on Goff’s staff, as his Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach.
The Devils scored 21 unanswered points late to get the win. Malik Pressley, a senior wide receiver, had two of those touchdowns, while junior wide receiver Mike Panzarino also caught an 88-yard touchdown reception.
Pressley likes playing at TCNJ. This was his first game back with the Devils after playing last season at Division III powerhouse Mount Union University in Ohio.
He had 271 receiving yards and three touchdowns in this game. In his last game at Lions Stadium in 2015, he also excelled, as he had a career-high 309 yards and four touchdowns.
Pressley has had 580 yards and seven touchdowns in two games against the Lions defense.
Lions senior running back Khani Glover, who had 81 yards and two touchdowns, scored the lone Lions second-half points. He scored on a two-yard run that gave the team a 24-17 lead with 9:47 left in the third quarter.
Pressley tied the game several minutes into the third with a 59-yard reception. The touchdown tied the game at 17.
The Lions looked good in the first half. They also had the lead going into halftime, which was 17-10.
Devils junior quarterback Jagger Green, who had 593 passing yards, threw a nine-yard touchdown to Khrystan Camillo. Nick Maciejewski also made a 28-yard field goal.
Lions senior quarterback Trevor Osler had a 175 passing yards, before being replaced by freshman signal-caller Andrew Donoghue due to injury. Donoghue had 98 passing yards.
Osler connected with senior tight end Chase Vena for the first scoring drive of the game for a 10-yard touchdown. Glover also scored on a five-yard run.
Zach Pharo also made a 21-yard field goal.
Lions junior linebacker Max Busca had 10 tackles, including an 0.5 tackle for a loss. He also had three breakups.
Freshman Jalen Harmon also had a forced fumble for TCNJ. Senior Kevin Hennelly and freshman Liam Abujawdeh also had interceptions.
Devils junior Isaiah Turner also had 17 tackles and a tackle for a loss. Junior Robert Planter also had a forced fumble, while Senior Michael Ferrante and Sophomore Steve Coury also had a breakup each.
