J.D. Martinez was acquired by the Arizona Diamondbacks in a trade with the Detroit Tigers before the July 31st trade deadline. Now, he accomplished a feat no Diamondbacks player, before him, was able to do.

Martinez hit four home runs against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California. He’s the first Diamondbacks player to accomplish this.

“It’s definitely a blessing, for sure,” Martinez said. “I don’t know how to explain it. It’s one of those things where you work real hard and find that perfect swing and find one of those days where everything just kind of lines up. Today, I felt like, was one of those days. I was seeing the ball well, and when I was swinging I was hitting them.”

In addition, he’s the 18th player in MLB history to do this. He’s the second player to do it this season, as Cincinnati Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett also had four home runs in their 13-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in June.

According to ESPN’s Stats and Information, Martinez is the first player ever, who hit four home runs, to hit home runs in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings. He went 4-for-5 with six RBI’s.

“It’s one of those days where you don’t want the game to end,” Martinez said, according to WXYZ Detroit ABC TV’s Brad Galli. “You just want it to keep going.”

While Martinez had four home runs, the Dodgers had just three hits. This is the first four home run game in which a player had more home runs than the opponent team had hits, according to ESPN’s Stats and Information. The Diamondbacks are the first team, who now has a 20-strikeout nine-inning game, a four home run game and a perfect game.

In MLB history, no player has ever hit five home runs. Following the game, Martinez met with fans, who were credited with catching his fourth home run.

He signed a bat and baseballs for his fourth home run ball, a milestone ball.

Since joining the Diamondbacks on July 18, he has a .237 batting average with 14 home runs in 39 games.
