Devils sign Hayes to a one-year deal

The New Jersey Devils have signed right winger Jimmy Hayes to a one-year deal. It’s a one-way deal worth $700,000.

The 27-year-old Hayes has had two goals and an assist for three points in five preseason games with the team. He was signed to a tryout deal on Aug. 23, 2017.

He played last season with the Boston Bruins, where he had two goals and three assists for five points. He also had 29 penalty minutes and a -3 rating in the 58 games he played in.

Hayes was traded to the Bruins, where he played the past two seasons, on July 1, 2015. The Florida Panthers acquired forwards Reilly Smith and Marc Savard in the deal.

Hayes began his NHL career with the Chicago Blackhawks. In two-years there, he appeared in 55 games and had 11 goals and seven assists for 18 points. He also had 18 PIM and a -5 rating.

He was traded to the Blackhawks from the Toronto Maple Leafs for the Calgary Flames second-round pick in the 2010 NHL Draft on June 25, 2010. He was then traded by the Blackhawks to the Panthers, along with Dylan Olsen, for Kris Versteeg and Phillipe Lefebvre.

He was released by the Bruins on June 30, 2017.
