AAA Missouri Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car pilot Robert Hight remained the No. 1 qualifier at the sixth annual AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Ill. He earned his seventh No. 1 qualifier of the season — and his second straight No. 1 qualifier.
Hight set both ends of the track record on Friday — and his No. 1 qualifier pass went 3.830 at 333.91 mph. It’s his 56th career No. 1 qualifier and the second-time at Gateway Motorsports Park.
Hight will face Dale Creasy Jr. in the first-round of eliminations.
“[Saturday] was getting ready for Sunday,” Hight said. “We pushed a little hard [on Saturday]. It was the first-time we smoked the tires two runs in a row in a long-time. It shows you [crew chief] Jimmy Prock was out there pushing. The conditions were out there.
“I’m honestly surprised [Saturday] nobody ran better than our .83 and that we’re still No. 1 qualifier. We were pushing hard. Sometimes you gotta know your threshold. Going into Sunday, if you’ve gone down the track every time, you don’t know how close you are to the edge. We definitely know where we’re at.”
Living legend and PEAK Coolant and Motor Oil Chevy Camaro SS Funny Car pilot John Force is the No. 2 qualifier. Force, who is Hight’s team owner, qualified second with a 3.832 at 335.32 mph and will face Brian Stewart, who ran 4.014 at 285.11 mph in his Ford Mustang, in the first-round.
NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger pilot Ron Capps, who won the Dodge NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pa. last weekend, is the No. 3 qualifier. He went 3.849 at 332.51 mph and will face 7-Eleven Dodge Charger driver Jim Campbell, who went 4.003 at 314.46 mph, in the first-round.
Tequila Patrón Toyota Camry Funny Car pilot Alexis DeJoria is the No. 4 qualifier after her 3.863 at 333.16 mph pass. She’ll face Snap-On Toyota Camry Funny Car pilot Cruz Pedregon in the first-round after he went 3.978 at 323.27 mph.
Rookie Head Racing Funny Car pilot Jonnie Lindberg is the No. 5 qualifier in his Toyota Camry with a 3.871 at 330.96 mph pass. He’ll face Levi, Ray and Shoup Inc. Ford Mustang Funny Car pilot Tim Wilkerson, who went 3.923 at 325.37 mph.
