Kyle Busch won the Apache Warriors 400 presented by Lucas Oil on Sunday at Dover International Speedway in Dover, Delaware. Busch picked up his fourth win of the season.

In 26 career races at the track, he now has three wins. This is his second straight season with four wins.

“Today was a good day, just being able to execute and do a really good job,” Busch said. “The team gave me a fast race car and a good piece, although early on it seemed like a bit of a struggle, and we weren’t as good as we wanted to be or as good as we expected to be, but we never gave up, kept working on it and making some good changes, some good adjustments to the car, and there at the end with that long run, for as far as Chase got out there, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to run him back down, but fortunately I did and gave it everything I had there for those last 60 laps.

“I was sore, my tongue was hanging out, the car’s tongue was hanging out, right rear tire was shot, just getting looser and looser as the run kind of kept going, was hindering my speed and the time that I could get there as fast as I wanted, but all in all, just a fun race and fun to be able to put on a good show like that, even though you have the agony or the delay of how long it took me to get there and then the pass was kind of like, whoa, that’s quick. Trust me, from my standpoint, it was pretty exciting.”

Busch, who started in the second position, improved one position. He outlasted No. 24 Chase Elliott, who finished second.

Elliott had the lead with two laps to go. However, instead of Elliott winning for the first time in his career, Busch used a late pass to get the win.

“Not as much as the disappointment today, so that’s — man, such a bummer, such a disappointment for my team,” Elliott said. “I don’t have a whole lot to add.”

Busch has won back-to-back races. He has also won three of the past six races. Since July’s Pocono race, he’s won four of the past nine races.

Busch is now 18 points behind Martin Truex Jr. for the championship lead. Ryan Newman, Austin Dillon, Kasey Kahne, and Kurt Busch have also been eliminated from championship contention.

Elliott improved ten positions to finish second. Jimmie Johnson, the seven-time champion, finished third.

Johnson needed to work through traffic to improve 14 spots from where he began the race.

“I think when we unloaded on Friday, we realized how much speed all of our Hendrick cars had,” Johnson said. “As we look back over the summer, it just seems like tracks with more banking, our combination works well, and we were able to exploit that this weekend. I wish I would have qualified better. I really think we had a shot at winning the race today, and at times I was better than the 24 and the 18 and was catching there at the end. I just never really had a track position to race for the win. I finally got top 3 there on the last run and we were out of laps.

“A solid day, though. Thankful to have SharkBite on the car this weekend and A.O. Smith, of course, Lowe’s, and our long-standing relationship there. Charlotte is a great track for us, as well, and typically when we run well at Dover, it carries over to Charlotte, and we’re optimistic about next week, too.”
