The Boston Celtics may have lost their prized off-season acquisition, Gordon Hayward, for the season. Hayward suffered a gruesome injury in the Celtics’ season-opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

Hayward’s injury happened in the first quarter of the game. He was going up for a contested alley-oop when he landed awkwardly as his leg twisted underneath him.

The game was stopped for several minutes, as medical personnel attended to Hayward. They put a cast on his leg and he was stretched off the court.

Hayward broke his ankle just five minutes into the game. Due to the severity of the injury, he may be forced to miss the rest of the season.

The injury also reminds fans of something similar that happened to Paul George during USA Basketball camp several years ago. George made a full recovery and returned to his stellar play.

His injury will now overshadow the Celtics’ season. Boston, with a healthy Hayward, was supposed to pressure the Cavaliers for the Eastern Conference crown, as they are considered the two best teams in the conference.

While he was being stretched off, Hayward gave a thumbs up, as he went to an awaiting ambulance. He was taken to a local hospital.

“You hurt for him,” Celtics head coach Brad Stevens said after the game. “It’s a tough, tough deal, but I guess that’s part of the risk of injury. I really feel for him.”

At this time, it is not clear how long Hayward will be out. The belief, due to the severity of the injury, is that Hayward will not play again this season.
