Chicago Bulls starting power forward Nikola Mirotić suffered a broken facial bone following a physical altercation with his teammate Bobby Portis on Tuesday. Mirotić is out indefinitely.
The two players were in a shoving match at practice before Portis punched Mirotić in the face. It’s not clear at this time what led to the altercation.
Mirotić was hospitalized and underwent tests before it was discovered he had a broken facial bone. He has since been released, according to ESPN.
The Bulls open their season on Thursday night against the Toronto Raptors. It’s likely Chicago head coach Fred Hoiberg does not have either player for the game, as Portis will likely be suspended for at least one game, or longer, due to the incident.
Mirotić averaged 10.6 points and 5.5 rebounds last season. He re-signed in the off-season with the Bulls after striking a two-year, $27 million extension.
Portis was previously the Bulls 22nd overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.
