It was thought with Philip Fulmer taking over as the athletic director that he would go with someone, who has ties to the school. Fulmer is going with the opposite.

The Tennessee Volunteers are expected to hire Alabama Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt as its next head coach. He replaces Butch Jones and Brady Hoke.

Jones was fired by former athletic director John Currie, who was hired to find its next head football coach, back in November. Hoke, a former college football coach with San Diego State and Michigan, was named interim head coach for the final few games of the season.

This will be Pruitt’s first head coaching job. He has been the Tide’s defensive coordinator since Kirby Smart accepted the Georgia Bulldogs head coaching job two years ago.

This will be a blow for the Tide, as head coach Nick Saban has as much trust in Pruitt as he did with Smart. Now, the next man up mentally will take place as Saban looks for a new coordinator.

Pruitt, along with Fulmer, will try to get the Volunteers fans united together. There has been a fractured relationship, which ultimately cost Currie his job after it was known that he wanted to hire Ohio State Buckeyes assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Greg Schiano.

There were protests on campus — and letters from politicians — suggesting that the Volunteers not hire Schiano due to a hearsay allegation from a 2016 judge from when he coached at Penn State. The mob mentality thought they were right — but put a black eye over this situation, as Schiano denied the allegations that he ever saw Jerry Sandusky raping a child in the football facility.

Regardless, the only way for Pruitt, along with Fulmer, to get past this is to win on the field.
