Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton will not waive his no-trade clause to join the San Francisco Giants. He reportedly told the franchise on Thursday.
The Marlins have been talking to the Giants and St. Louis Cardinals representatives. Stanton’s representatives met with both teams last weekend.

Both the Giants and the Cardinals have previously agreed to the framework of an agreement with the Marlins. However, Stanton has the final say on whether he’ll accept a trade or not.

The Giants and Cardinals — if no agreement is made with Stanton soon — could look at other alternatives on the free-agent market. Stanton could also decide to just accept a trade to the Cardinals and all this drama would be over.
“We had an agreement to acquire Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins, subject to him waiving his no-trade clause,” the Cardinals said. “We have been notified that he will not waive his no-trade clause to come to St. Louis. While we are disappointed in his decision, we will continue to make every effort to improve our club for the upcoming season.
“Unfortunately, we were not able to convince Stanton to waive his no-trade clause and join the Cardinals. We felt this was a great landing spot for him, but it was not meant to be.”
Stanton has spent his entire career with the Marlins. Despite signing a 10-year extension with the team before the new administration took over, led by former New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter, the new leaders want to rid themselves of his $325 million deal.
He made his debut as a 20-year-old in 2010 and spent the past eight seasons with the team. Through 986 games, he has a .268 batting average with 267 home runs and 672 RBIs.

Stanton is considered one of the best young players in the game. The 59 home runs were a Marlins record.
However, it’s still shy of the asterisk record of Barry Bonds. Some still consider that Roger Maris record with 62 is the true record.
