According to reports, New York Jets offensive coordinator John Morton could be joining Jon Gruden’s Oakland Raiders staff soon. Gruden first has to be named the Raiders next head coach after they fired former head coach Jack Del Rio on Sunday.
Morton would be the Raiders offensive coordinator. He would join Gruden’s first coaching staff since 2009 when he was fired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Morton reportedly considers Gruden as his mentor. The 48-year-old Michigan native never coached with Gruden before in the league.
He only has one season of experience in the NFL as an offensive coordinator, which came this past season with the Jets. They were 24th in the league with 18.6 points per game with very limited offensive weapons.
The team averaged 305.2 yards per game, which was 28th overall in the league with limited offensive weapons. Josh McCown basically averaged 198.9 passing yards per game, which was 24th in the league. They also had a 106.4 rushing yards per game, which was 19th.
Prior to joining Todd Bowles staff this season, he spent the past two seasons as the New Orleans Saints wide receiver coach in 2015 and 2016. He also was the San Francisco 49ers wide receivers coach from 2011 through 2014.
This move would allow him to return to the Bay Area for the first-time since the 2014 season. He also coached in Los Angeles, California, where he was the USC Trojans offensive coordinator in 2009 and 2010.
He was also the Trojans wide receivers coach in 2007 and 2008. He spent the 2006 season as the Saints offensive assistant.
He began his coaching career with the Oakland Raiders in 2002 through 2004 season, first as an offensive assistant, then tight ends coach. He was the San Diego Toreros wide receivers coach in 2005.
