The Green Bay Packers have hired Brian Gutekunst to be their next general manager. He replaces Ted Thompson.
Thompson served as the Packers general manager from 2005 through 2017. However, after the Packers were eliminated from the playoffs for the first time since 2008, the team announced a re-organization of their front office.
The 64-year-old Thompson will now serve as the Packers Senior Advisor to Football Operations.
Like they have done in the past, the Packers have an internal promotion with this hire. Gutekunst previously served as the team’s Director of Player Personnel since March 21st, 2016.
Gutekunst has been a rising candidate in general manager circles in the past few years. Now, he is one.
This season will be his 20th season with the team. Prior to his Director of Player Personnel promotion, he was the team’s Director of College Scouting.
Prior to that, he was a scout for 13-years with the team.
