The Detroit Lions have found their next head coach. However, they cannot hire him right now.
The team is expected to hire New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. He cannot officially be one their head coach until the Patriots are eliminated or they win Super Bowl LII.
He has battled with the decision between going to the Lions and the New York Giants. We reported earlier this week that he preferred the Giants because he is from New York.
Yet, the Lions are way closer to the playoffs than the Giants. Plus, Detroit has several franchise players in key positions like quarterback, tackle and cornerback.
Also, Patricia already has a relationship with Lions general manager Bob Quinn. He previously worked with the Patriots before going to the Lions.
The Giants are in a completely different story. They are rebuilding — and may even let their star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. walk.
New York has too many question marks. They are even likely to move away from its former franchise quarterback Eli Manning and draft either Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen with the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Plus, it’s likely going to be a long-time before they are going to be good again. Usually rebuilding takes a few years.
