Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado was on the trading block for much of the off-season. The Orioles could not find the right package for their star.

Instead, he is staying with the team, at least for the 2018 season. Orioles manager Buck Showalter confirmed on Saturday morning that Machado will be changing positions.

Machado, who was the third baseman for the past several seasons, will make the switch to shortstop for this upcoming season. This will be the final season of his contract before he becomes a free agent.

Tim Beckham, who was acquired in a trade last season with the Tampa Bay Rays, was the team’s shortstop for the stretch run. Now, he will transition over to third base for this season.

Machado played 156 games at third base last season.

He has only played in 52 games at shortstop in his career. He played in 45 games at the position in 2016 with seven games in 2015.

Beckham, like Machado, has limited experience in his new position. He has only nine games of experience at third base in his career.
