Ottawa added Marián Gáborík and Nick Shore in the deal. In addition, they will pick up 25% of Phaneuf’s contract.

Phaneuf will make $7 million per season through the 2020-21 season.

The Senators were playing against the Pittsburgh Penguins when the news began to leak out. Phaneuf was on the bench at the end of the second period; however, when the team returned following the second intermission, he was no longer on the bench.

The Kings were also playing against the Carolina Hurricanes when the deal happened.

Ottawa has reportedly been attempting to deal Phaneuf since December. At that time, they asked players to submit their no-trade lists.

This season in 52 games, Phaneuf had 16 points. He just has three goals. He also had just 30 points in 81 games last season.

Gáborík has had 14 points in 29 games with the Kings this season. However, he has been limited due to Los Angeles’ depth and injuries.

Shore has had 15 points in 48 games this season with the Kings. Thompson had 11 points in 43 games with the Senators.

Phaneuf is expected to be the Kings top defenseman. He’s expected to join Drew Doughty on the first line.

Gáborík is expected to be on the first-line for the Senators. He’s expected to join Mike Hoffman and Matt Duchene on that line.
