Shocker! UMBC beats top seeded Virginia

The No. 16 seeded UMBC Retrievers will forever be known as the first No. 16 seeded team to pull off the biggest upset in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship history. They defeated the No. 1 seeded Virginia Cavaliers, 74-54, on Friday night at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Cavaliers were the No. 1 seed in the South Region. They were also the top overall seed in the entire tournament.

The Retrievers improved to 25-10 on the season. This is also their biggest win in school history.

With the historic upset, UMBC will now face the No. 9 seeded Kansas State Wildcats on Sunday. The Cincinnati Bearcats, Tennessee Volunteers, and Kentucky Wildcats are now the top-seeded teams left in the region.

The Cavaliers fell to 31-3 on the season.

Jarius Lyles led the Retrievers with 28 points. He also had four rebounds and three assists.

Lyles was one of three UMBC players, who scored in double-digits. Joe Sherburne added 14 points, while Arkel Lamar had 12 points, and K.J. Maura added 10 points.

Jourdan Grant had eight bench points.

Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome led the Cavaliers with 15 points each. Guy had four rebounds, one assist, and two steals.

The Cavaliers had 15 bench points. Nigel Johnson led the bench with nine points.
