Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt gets piece of net

The Loyola-Chicago Ramblers won their first three games of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship by four points. On Saturday, they won their fourth game in the tournament by 16 points.

The Ramblers defeated the Kansas State Wildcats, 78-62, at Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. They were the first team to clinch a Final Four berth.

Following their win, as they were cutting down the nets, the team made a special gesture. Not only did the players get a piece of the net that they cut down, they also made sure that Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, the team’s 98-year-old team chaplain, also had a piece of the net.

This is the Ramblers’ second Final Four appearance in school history. The last time they advanced to the Final Four, they won the National Championship in 1963.

Loyola-Chicago will now face the No. 3 Michigan Wolverines next weekend in San Antonio, Texas. America’s Cinderella will hope to keep on dancing in the final weekend of the tournament.

Loyola-Chicago defeated the Duke Blue Devils in the first national semi-final 94-75 in the 1963 Final Four. The Cincinnati Bearcats defeated the Oregon State Beavers in the second national semi-final 80-46.

The Ramblers then defeated the Bearcats 60-58 to win the National Championship.
