The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed outfielder Yasmany Tomás on waivers. He was optioned to Triple-A last week before the season started.

He has also been removed from Arizona’s 40-Man roster. He signed a six-year, $68 million deal with the team in December 2014.

He is still owed approx. $42 million of the deal.

When he’s been healthy, he has shown that he can be a productive hitter. But because of his defense, it is unlikely that he will pass through waivers and be claimed by a new team.

If that’s the case, the Diamondbacks would then have two options: Allow Tomás
to stay at the Triple-A level or unconditionally release him. If he declines the option to Triple-A, he would forfeit the rest of his deal.

The 27-year-old is signed through the 2020 season if he’s picked up by another team. He played in three MLB seasons.

Last season, he played in a career-low 47 games. He had .241 batting average with eight home runs and 32 RBIs.

In his three-year career, he appeared in 305 games. He had .268 batting average with 48 home runs and 163 RBIs.

The best season of his career came in 2016 when he appeared in 140 games. He had .272 batting average with 31 home runs and 83 RBIs.

The Diamondbacks need help in the outfield, but they would rather have somebody else in the field than Tomás. Arizona lost J.D. Martinez, who signed with the Boston Red Sox in free agency, and Steven Souza Jr. is dealing with an injury.

According to MLB.com, the Diamondbacks depth chart has David Peralta in left field. A.J. Pollock is manning center field and Jarrod Dyson is in right field.
