The Cleveland Browns have drafted former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. News began to leak out on Wednesday that the Browns were leaning towards Mayfield over former Wyoming Cowboys quarterback Josh Allen.

Browns general manager John Dorsey reportedly knew that he was going to draft Mayfield with the top pick six weeks ago. However, he did not tell his head coach Hue Jackson until this past Tuesday.

He is hoping that Mayfield is the answer to their quarterback problems. They have not had a franchise quarterback, as nearly all their quarterbacks, who they drafted, have turned out to be busts.

Dorsey and many of the new executives he brought in were instructed to find a quarterback with the top overall pick. They are hoping that they did that with this selection.

Mayfield joins Tyrod Taylor and Drew Stanton on the Browns quarterback depth chart. Both Taylor and Stanton joined the team this off-season, as Taylor was acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Bills, while Stanton signed a two-year deal as a free agent.

Mayfield is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner. He is the first former Heisman winner to go No. 1 overall since the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Jameis Winston in 2015.

The redshirt senior played in 14 games for the Sooners this past season. He went 285 of 404 for 4,627 passing yards. He also had 43 touchdowns and six interceptions.

He played three seasons with the Sooners. There, he went 808 for 1,157 for 12,292 yards in Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley’s system. He also had 119 touchdowns, while throwing nine interceptions.

He was 33-6 as a starter with the Sooners. Mayfield guided the Sooners to three straight Big 12 Championships and a College Football Playoff appearance in 2018.

In 2013, as a freshman, he appeared in eight games with the Texas Tech Red Raiders. He went 218 of 340 f00r 2,315 passing yards. He had 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
