Wayne Rooney is the latest soccer star to decide to come to America to play in Major League Soccer. Rooney and his representatives have agreed to a deal in principle on Thursday.
The deal is reportedly worth £12 million ($16.2 million US Dollars) for Rooney to play this summer and beyond with D.C. United. According to Sky Sports, Rooney, along with his team, has reportedly been working on this transfer for at least seven weeks.
Rooney is expected to join the Washington, D.C. based team in July. He is the latest high-profile soccer player to join MLB in recent weeks, as Zlatan Ibrahimović joined the Los Angeles Galaxy in late March.
The 36-year-old reportedly turned down a $100 million deal in China to join the Galaxy. His charisma has also made him a hit on late-night TV shows and other appearances he has made since he came to America.
The 32-year-old Rooney will leave Everton a year after he re-joined the English Premier League team. According to reports, when he signed back with Everton last summer, he had a two-year agreement with a third-year option.
He went back to Everton after playing more than a decade (13 years) with the Red Devils of Manchester United. He made a career-high 393 appearances and scored a career-high 183 goals.
His first two seasons in professional soccer were with Everton, where he played from 2002 through 2004. He made 67 appearances, along with 15 goals.
This summer, the United will move into a new stadium, Audi Field in Washington, D.C., and Rooney’s addition would help with attracting fans. Audi Field has a capacity of 20,000 fans.
Rooney has worn No. 10 in his career. However, that number is presently taken by Luciano Acosta.
