Sports betting is considered illegal outside of either Delaware, New Jersey, or Nevada. However, according to ESPN, the Supreme Court struck down a federal law, which would now allow sports betting almost everywhere.
The law, which was in place, barred sports betting on football, basketball, baseball, and other sports. Now, states will be allowed to legalize sports betting.
The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PAPSA) was previously put in place in 1992. The law banned state-authorized sports gambling with some exceptions.

At the time, Nevada was the only state, where a person could wager on the results of a game. A research firm that ESPN interviewed said that if the Supreme Court did not strike down the law, 32 states would have offered sports betting within the next five years.
The Supreme Court heard a case from New Jersey that helped sway their decision. The Garden State, which was fighting to have sports betting for years, recently was granted access to legalized sports betting.
Then former N.J. Governor Chris Christie was sued in 2012 by the NCAA and the four major professional sports leagues after he signed a bill into legislation to allow sports betting. The law went against PASPA, which said it was “unlawful for a state to sponsor, operate, advertise, promote, license, or authorize by law” sports wagering.
Despite losing every step, New Jersey was persistent. The Supreme Court initially declined their case in June 2014.
They did not give up on their pursuit of legalized sports betting. Christie then passed another bill to comply with PASPA.

However, in December 2017, it was ruled in New Jersey’s favor to legalize sports betting. Twenty states signed in support of New Jersey’s bill.
