The Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms with free agent second baseman Brandon Phillips. He has received a minor league deal from the team.

The 36-year-old, who will turn 37-years-old on Thursday, has not played in Major League Baseball this season. He will play third base for Triple-A Pawtucket.

Last season, when Phillips last was a professional, he played in 25 games at third base with the Atlanta Braves. If he gets the promotion to the Red Sox, it would likely be as a back up to Dustin Pedroia.

Since June 2nd, Pedroia has been sidelined with a knee injury. Eduardo Núñez and Brock Holt have filled in with Pedroia sidelined.

Besides the Braves, Phillips also played for the Los Angeles Angels. Combined, he played in 144 games, but only played in 24 games with the Angels.

With both teams, he had .285 batting average with 13 home runs and 60 RBIs. He also had 34 doubles and one triple in 163 hits.

Throughout his career, he has played with the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Indians besides the Angels and Braves. The majority of his playing career was in the National League.

In his career, he has appeared in 1,893 games. He has a career .275 batting average with 210 home runs and 949 RBIs with 368 doubles and 35 triples in 2,026 hits.
