It is tough to get a Wally in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. For Hector Arana Jr., he had not won a Wally since September 2015.
Arana Jr. defeated Jerry Savoie in the final round at the Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colorado. Arana Jr. won off of the line after Savoie went red.
Savoie was -0.004 red to give Arana Jr. his first Wally since St. Louis 2015. Arana Jr. also went red at -0.002; however, since Savoie went red first, Arana Jr. was awarded the win.
“We have had a fast bike all the time, just been working on consistency and then when the bike was good I was making little errors,” said Arana Jr. “Dedication, hard work, and practicing to bring it all together. Finally got over some hurdles over here and now we should be back on track.”
Prior to this final round, Arana Jr. held an 8-7 record against Savoie. Each had previously won a final round against each other.
Arana Jr. picked up his first win of the season. He said this Wally is extra special because he and his wife are expected a baby soon.
He improved to 12-12 in career final rounds.
