Atco, N.J. — Permatex/Follow A Dream Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Phil Burkhart Jr. leads the qualifying of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Atco Dragway on Friday afternoon. Burkhart Jr. rose to the top after being the final pair down the track with Dan Pomponio.

Burkhart Jr. went 5.632 at 263.67 mph to become the top qualifier at the moment. There will be at least one more qualifying session this evening, as long as the rain holds off.

Pomponio is the No. 2 qualifier at the moment following his 5.675 at 295.31 mph pass.

Frederick Tigges — who returned to drag racing last season after taking some time off — is the No. 3 qualifier. He went down the track in the first pair with Marie Ferriolo-Trib. Tigges went 5.776 at 247.84 mph.

Quick Draw sponsored Matt Gill is the No. 4 qualifier after his pass. He went 5.782 at 257.87 mph when he went down the track in the second pair with John Headley.

Headley is the No. 5 qualifier after he went 7.850 at 124.44 mph. Ferriolo-Trib had problems going down the track, as she had a supercharger problem and went 8.141 at 2.49 mph.

Burkhart Jr. is looking to repeat as the winner of this race, as he defeated Aryan Rochan in last year’s event. Burkhart Jr. went 5.586 to Rochan’s 5.670.

If Burkhart Jr. does win this event, it’ll be his first win this season. Gill and Pomponio each have a win this season, as Pomponio won the last event.

Sean Bellemeur won the race over Pomponio at Maple Grove Raceway May 25th-27th.
