Pomponio advances to the second round at Atco Dragway

Pomponio Racing’s Dan Pomponio advanced to the second round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Atco Dragway in the first-round of eliminations on Saturday. Pomponio, the Berlin, New Jersey native, defeated Mathew Gill in the first-round.

Pomponio went 5.650 at 259.31 mph to get the win after an 0.27 reaction time off the line. Gill lost with a 5.678 at 161.12 mph pass.

Frederick Tigges received a competition bye in the first-round. John Headley was scheduled to be his opponent. However, after doing the burnout, Headley had trouble going into reverse. The Atco Dragway officials decided to give Tigges the bye.

The Holbrook, Mass. native went 5.664 at 159.16 mph.

Permatex/Follow A Dream Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Phil Burkhart Jr. also advanced with a competition bye. He received the bye after Marie Ferriolo car had problems in the first round of qualifying on Friday afternoon. Ferriolo blew up many parts when she ran into problems.

Burkhart Jr., the Yorkville, New York native, went 5.715 at 227.11 mph. Ferriolo, like Headley, received the Broke designation.

Burkhart Jr. is looking for his second straight win at Atco Dragway. Last year, he defeated Aryan Rochan in the final round.

Second Round of Eliminations are upcoming at approximately 6:30 pm EST.
