After Hunter-Reay hit Wickens, his car went airborne and hit the outside wall at full speed. The catch fence was heavily damaged and needed to be replaced.

“I was lucky to get out of that one,” said Hunter-Reay, who believed he had cleared Wickens’ car and had given him enough room on the track before the contact.

IndyCar said that Wickens is awake and alert. He was airlifted to a local hospital, where they will treat his condition. IndyCar said they will release an update on his condition as it becomes available.

The 29-year-old Canadian has raced in 14 IndyCar races this season. He was coming off of a second-place finish at Mid-Ohio at the end of July.

Wickens, the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver, has four podium finishes this season. Two of those four podiums have come in the past two races, as he also in third place after the Toronto race.

Three-years ago, former IndyCar driver Justin Wilson died in Allentown, Pennsylvania after an incident on Lap 180 of the ABC Supply 500 on August 23rd, 2015.

Sage Karam, who was leading the face at the time, crashed and sent debris airborne. James Jakes slowed down, but Wilson was still going faster than Jakes and went on the outside to avoid contact when the nose cone from Karam’s car hit Wilson as he was driving the car.

Wilson’s car then veered to the left to the inside wall. He died the next day after the crash.
