Oakland Raiders star defensive player Khalil Mack may miss games to begin the season, according to a report by Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson. He says Mack is willing to hold out even longer.
Robinson insists that there is no progress in contract talks with the team. He said there has been a stalemate between the two sides since February.
Mack has previously stated that he has not talked to new Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden. He was hired by the team in January.
The hold up, according to Robinson, is the guaranteed money. He said that the guaranteed money will be placed into escrow at the time of his signing, but it is not a concern for the team, Robinson reports.
He alleges that Gruden may be not willing to pay him a top-of-the-market deal. If that is the case, then Mack will likely be dealt.
Several teams have already expressed interest that they would deal for him. He’s one of the best young defensive players in the league.
The 27-year-old has spent the past four seasons with the Raiders after being the fifth overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Last season, he had 61 tackles, 10.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and three pass deflections.
In 64 career games, all starts, he has had 231 tackles, 40.5 sacks, one interception that was returned for a touchdown, nine forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and 11 pass deflections.
