Porter wins belt after defeating Garcia in Brooklyn

Shawn Porter is the new World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion. The 30-year-old defeated Danny Garcia at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

“I tell people all the time, ‘I don’t make predictions,'” Porter said after the fight. “I made a prediction and a hard one to live up to. I said I wasn’t leaving New York without this belt, and I’m not leaving New York without this belt.”

Porter improved to 29-2-1 in his career. The Akron, Ohio native has now won three straight bouts, including two straight by unanimous decision.

He has fought his last four fights at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. He improved to 3-1 during that streak with the only loss coming to Keith Thurman by unanimous decision on June 25th, 2016.

Porter also has a win over Devon Alexander on December 7th, 2013 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the International Boxing Federation World Welterweight Championship.

Garcia has fallen to 34-2 in his boxing career. The Philadelphia, Pa. native has now lost two of his last three bouts.

Besides the loss to Porter, he also lost to Keith Thurman on March 4th, 2017 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Thurman won the World Boxing Association Super World Welterweight Championship, as well as the World Boxing Council World Welterweight Championship.

In between the losses to Porter and Thurman, Garcia also defeated Brandon Rios on February 17th, 2018 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
