The Oakland Raiders are taking a gamble on Martavius Bryant. He has signed a one-year deal with the team.
Bryant signing is surprising, as he is reportedly facing a year-long suspension for violating the team’s substance abuse policy. The Raiders had recently released him because of the fact that he is facing the suspension.
In the Raiders home opener on Monday night, quarterback Derek Carr completed just five passes to receivers. He had 42 drop backs in the game to the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football on ESPN.
Bryant may be a speedy option for Carr if he even plays for the team. It’s not clear exactly when the league is going to hit him with his year-long suspension.
If he’s not suspended by Sunday, he is expected to play for the team.
Bryant, the South Carolina native, who was a fourth-round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2014 NFL Draft, has only played for the Steelers in his career. He missed the 2016 season due to a year-long suspension.
He appeared in 15 games, including eight starts last season with the Steelers. He also complained he did not receive the ball enough, yet he made 50 receptions for 602 yards and three touchdowns.
Bryant even requested a trade from the team last year, but they decided to keep him.
In his career, he has made 36 appearances, including 16 starts. He has made 126 receptions for 1,917 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns.
He also has 14 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown.
