Torrence claims No. 1 qualifier with 3.675 pass near St. Louis

Capco Contractors Top Fuel Dragster pilot Steve Torrence is the No. 1 qualifier on Saturday night at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Illinois. The Kilgore, Texas native went 3.675 at 327.19 mph in the final round of qualifying to claim the top spot.

Torrence picked up his third No. 1 qualifier of the season. In addition, this is his 19th No. 1 qualifier of his career. He is also the defending event winner.

“It was a good qualifying effort on our part,” Torrence state. “(Saturday)’s track conditions were the best of the season thus far. We were trying to run harder on Billy’s (Torrence) car but ended up being able to do it with my car taking the No.1 spot. We are feeling confident going into (Sunday).”

Great Clips/Parts Plus Top Fuel Dragster pilot Clay Millican is the No. 2 qualifier. The Drummonds, Tennessee native went 3.692 at 329.83 mph.

Capco Contractors Top Fuel Dragster pilot Billy Torrence, the father of Steve, is the No. 3 qualifier. The Kilgore, Texas native, who picked up his first career Wally at Brainerd International Raceway in August in Brainerd, Minnesota, went 3.717 at 328.06 mph.

Pronto Service Center sponsored Top Fuel Dragster pilot Blake Alexander is the No. 4 qualifier. The Charlotte, North Carolina native went 3.717 at 326.87 mph.

Papa John’s Top Fuel Dragster pilot Leah Pritchett is currently in the fifth spot. The Danville, Indiana native went 3.718 at 330.96 mph.

No. 9 Mike Salinas 3.760 328.78 mph

No. 12 Scott Palmer 3.779 323.74 mph
No. 13 Terry McMillen 3.796 326.32 mph
No. 14 Pat Dakin 3.796 322.58 mph
No. 15 Shawn Reed 3.812 326.24 mph
No. 16 Bill Litton 3.925 310.20 mph

Three Top Fuel Dragsters did not make the show. Luigi Novelli, who qualified 17th, went 3.930 at 278.69 mph. Lex Joon was the 18th qualifier after going 4.244 at 202.45 mph.

“The Greek” Chris Karamesines was the 19th qualifier after he went 5.717 at 158.26 mph.
