Patriots place RB Burkhead on IR

The New England Patriots have placed running back Rex Burkhead on injured reserve. Burkhead is dealing with a neck injury.

The Patriots made this move after signing Kenjon Barner. While neck injuries are nothing to be played with, as it could be a long-term health problem, he’s definitely done for the season.

Rookie Sony Michel was playing ahead of Burkhead before his neck injury.

The 28-year-old Plano, Texas native had two receptions for 26 yards in the Patriots loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football on NBC. He did have six carries for 22 yards against the Patriots Week 2 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He also had 18 carries for 64 yards in the season-opener against the Houston Texans. He also had one reception for five yards.

Burkhead is in his second season with the Patriots after spending the first four seasons of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals.

In three games, including two starts, he has 24 carries for 86 yards. He also has three receptions for 31 yards.

In his first season with the Patriots last season, Burkhead appeared in 10 games, including three starts. He had 64 carries for 264 yards and five touchdowns. He also had 30 receptions for 254 yards and three more touchdowns.

In 13 games with the Patriots, he has made five starts. He has had 88 carries for 350 yards and five touchdowns. He also has 33 receptions for 285 yards and three more touchdowns.

In four seasons with the Bengals, he had 42 appearances, including one start. He had 87 carries for 375 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 34 receptions for 288 yards and a touchdown.
