According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the San Francisco 49ers are considering veteran quarterback Tom Savage to backup C.J. Beathard. Garafolo said Savage is the favorite to sign with the team.

On Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, the 49ers lost starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a season-ending torn ACL injury. The injury was confirmed by the team on Monday.

The 49ers, according to Garafolo, was already planning to work out Savage. However, he is not expected to sign with the team this week, as they would need to make roster moves in order to free up a spot to sign him.

Whoever the team decides to sign, he will be Beathard’s backup. In another note, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan admitted that the franchise has no interest in signing former quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

The 28-year-old has spent his entire career with the Houston Texans prior to his release. He then spent training camp with the New Orleans Saints, before his release, as well.

Savage last appeared in eight games with the Texans last season with starting quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending torn ACL injury.

Savage went 125 of 223 for 1,412 passing yards, including one 300-plus passing game. He had five touchdowns and six interceptions.

The 1,412 passing yards was the most in Savage’s three-year career. Prior to that, his career-best was 461 yards during the 2016 season.
