Five up. Five down. The No. 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated the No. 7 Stanford Cardinal, 38-17, on Saturday night at Notre Dame Stadium in Notre Dame, Indiana.
The Fighting Irish, who are coming off of a 10-3 season in 2017, is a perfect 5-0 on the season. They also improved to 4-0 at home.
Notre Dame has won five straight games to begin their season since the 2012 season. That season, they went 12-1, losing to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the BCS National Championship game.
Stanford fell to 4-1 on the season. They are now 1-1 on the road. The Cardinals are tied with the No. 11 Washington Huskies, who are 2-0 in conference play, but 4-1 records overall.
Fighting Irish quarterback Ian Book went 24 of 33 for 278 yards. He also had four touchdowns.
Dexter Williams had 21 carries for 161 yards and a touchdown. Book had 15 carries for 47 yards. Tony Jones Jr. had 10 carries for 40 yards.
Miles Boykin had 11 receptions for 144 yards and a touchdown. Alize Mack had a 35-yard touchdown reception. Chris Finke had two receptions for 30 yards. Chase Claypool had three receptions for 23 yards and a touchdown. Nic Weishar also had a six-yard touchdown reception.
Cardinal quarterback K.J. Costello went 15 of 27 for 174 yards. He had a touchdown and an interception.
Bryce Love, who also led the game for some time, had 17 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown.
Trenton Irwin had five receptions for 57 yards. Osiris St. Brown had a 45-yard reception. Colby Parkinson had a 31-yard reception. JJ Arcega-Whiteside had five receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown.
The Fighting Irish outscored the Cardinal 17-3 in the second half. Book hit Boykin for an eight-yard touchdown reception. Book also hit Mack for a 35-yard touchdown reception.
Notre Dame’s Justin Yoon also made a 37-yard field goal. Stanford’s Jet Toner also made a 46-yard field goal.
The home team led 21-14 at halftime. Book hit Claypool for a 10-yard touchdown reception. Book also hit Weishar for a six-yard touchdown reception. Williams also scored on a 45-yard rushing touchdown.
Stanford’s Love scored on a 39-yard rushing touchdown. Costello also hit Arcega-Whiteside for a four-yard touchdown reception.
