Appalachian State defeats Arkansas State with big win in Jonesboro

The Appalachian State Mountaineers defeated the Arkansas State Red Wolves on Tuesday night. The Mountaineers won 35-9 over the Red Wolves at Centennial Bank Stadium in Jonesboro, Arkansas. 

The Mountaineers improved to 4-1 on the season with the win. The team is now 2-0 in conference play.

The loss dropped the Red Wolves to 3-3 overall. Arkansas State has lost both of their conference games thus far.

Mountaineers quarterback Zac Thomas went 12 of 27 for 144 yards. He had two touchdown passes. 

Darrynton Evans had 16 carries for 115 yards and a touchdown. Jalen Virgil had two receptions for 47 yards. 

Red Wolves quarterback Justice Hansen went 25 of 40 for 209 yards. He had three interceptions. 

Marcel Murray had 11 carries for 37 yards. Kirk Merritt had nine receptions for 73 yards. 

The Mountaineers scored 14 points in the second half. The Red Wolves were shut out. 

Thomas scored on a 62-yard rushing touchdown. Thomas also connected with Collin Reed for a three-yard touchdown reception. 

Appalachian State led 21-9 at halftime. All 21 points were scored in the second quarter. 

Jalen Moore scored on a 27-yard rushing touchdown. Thomas hit Corey Sutton for a 25-yard touchdown reception. Evans also scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown. 

Red Wolves kicker Blake Grupe made three field goals. He first made a 31-yard field goal. He also made a 47-yard field goal.

Grupe also made a 33-yard field goal.
