In the first Tuesday night football game of the season, the Appalachian State Mountaineers defeated the Arkansas State Red Wolves. The Mountaineers won 35-9 at Centennial Bank Stadium in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
Appalachian State improved to 4-1 on the season. The Mountaineers have won four straight games after losing a nail-biter to the No. 8 Penn State Nittany Lions to begin the season.
Arkansas State fell to 3-3 on the season. They have lost back-to-back games, as they also lost to Georgia Southern on Saturday, September 29th.
Mountaineers quarterback Zac Thomas went 12 of 27 for 144 yards. He also had two touchdowns.
Darrynton Evans had 16 carries for 115 rushing yards and a touchdown. Thomas had six carries for 76 yards and a touchdown. Jalin Moore had seven carries for 32 yards and a touchdown.
Jalen Virgil had two receptions for 47 yards. Corey Sutton had a 25-yard touchdown reception. Collin Reed also had two receptions for 15 yards and a touchdown.
Red Wolves quarterback Justice Hansen went 25 of 40 for 209 yards. He also had three interceptions.
Backup quarterback Logan Bonner went 2 of 5 for 10 yards.
Marcel Murray had 11 carries for 37 yards. Hansen had 12 carries for 30 yards. Alex Roberts had four carries for 21 yards. Warren Ward had seven carries for 20 yards.
Kirk Merritt had nine receptions for 73 yards. Justin McInnis had seven receptions for 55 yards. Omar Bayless had two receptions for 30 yards. Reed Taylor had three receptions for 29 yards.
Appalachian State scored two second-half touchdowns. Thomas hit Reed for a three-yard touchdown reception.
Thomas also scored on a 62-yard rushing touchdown.
The Mountaineers led 21-9 at halftime. Moore scored on a 27-yard rushing touchdown. Thomas also hit Sutton for a 25-yard touchdown reception.
Evans also scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown.
Blake Grupe also made three field goals for Arkansas State.
