Johnson Jr. claims second straight No. 1 qualifier on Saturday at zMAX

Make-A-Wish Foundation Funny Car pilot Tommy Johnson Jr. secured his second straight No. 1 qualifier on Saturday. He is the No. 1 qualifier of the NHRA Carolina Nationals presented by WIX Filters at zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina.

Johnson Jr. went 3.873 at 329.10 mph during the fourth session of the weekend. It is his 17th career No. 1 qualifier.

“We’ve got a really, really good race car right now and the guys are doing such a great job,” Johnson Jr. said. “You can just see it in their confidence. I would say the only thing we have to change is semifinals (where he has lost three of the past four races). We have to fix that this weekend. We’ve had a good car for the last 6-7 races and we just keep building on it.”

Johnson Jr. will face Dave Richards in the first-round of eliminations on Sunday.

NAPA Auto Parts NIGHTVISION Lamps Funny Car pilot Ron Capps is the No. 2 qualifier. The Carlsbad, California native went 3.875 at 329.42 mph.

Capps will face Dale Creasy Jr. in the first-round of eliminations. The Beecher, Illinois native went 4.181 at 301.87 mph.

Levi, Ray, and Shoup Inc. Funny Car pilot Tim Wilkerson is the No. 3 qualifier. The Springfield, Illinois native went 3.876 at 323.74 mph.

Wilkerson will face Jim Campbell in the first-round on Sunday. The Huntington Beach, California native went 4.035 at 309.42 mph.

DHL Funny Car pilot J.R. Todd is the No. 4 qualifier. The Indianapolis, Indiana native — who won the first race of the Countdown to the Championship at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pa. — went 3.894 at 327.90 mph.

Todd will face Jonnie Lindberg in the first-round of eliminations. The Brownsburg, Indiana native went 3.959 at 323.19 mph.

Snap-On Tools Funny Car pilot Cruz Pedregon is the No. 5 qualifier. The Brownsburg, Indiana native — who snapped a multi-year winless streak in April at the Four-Wide Nationals at this facility — went 3.901 at 325.77 mph.

Pedregon will face Courtney Force in the first-round of eliminations. The Yorba Linda, California native went 3.945 at 308.50 mph.

There was one Funny Car on the property that did not qualify for the race. That is Gastonia, North Carolina native Bob Gilbertson, who went 4.301 at 250.88 mph.
