Melvin Rowland, the alleged gunman, who allegedly gunned down Utah Utes track star Lauren McCluskey on Monday night, has been found dead inside a church. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Rowland, 37-years-old and a registered sex offender, was found inside Trinity AME Church at 239 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. according to Fox 13 Salt Lake City.

The Utes have canceled classes on Tuesday. The athletic department also announced that there would be no football availability due to the incident.

While there are no classes, the campus is open with counselors available for students, faculty, and staff.

Lt. Brian Wahlin from the University of Utah Police Department said that Rowland and McCluskey had a dispute before the shooting. He also said the two previously were in a relationship.

McCluskey’s family said that Rowland lied about his age and criminal history when the two were together. According to Fox 13, McCluskey ended their relationship earlier this month after finding out the truth.

Her family also stated that McCluskey sought police help in getting her car back from Rowland on October 10th. That’s also the same day she reportedly ended their relationship.

She also reported to the authorities that she was being harassed by him.

Rowland was convicted on July 19, 2004, with enticing a minor (2nd-degree felony) in Utah. He was released in September 2013.

He was also convicted on July 19th, 2004 of forcible sexual abuse-attempted (third-degree felony).

This shooting happens nearly one year after a student was killed on campus. ChenWei Guo, a Chinese national, was killed that led to a massive manhunt for the shooter.
