One of the names that are going to be brought up after the Cleveland Browns fired head coach Hue Jackson is Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley. However, according to CollegeFootballTalk, he has no interest in the position.
Riley has close ties to 2018 No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield. The Austin, Texas native played his collegiate football with the Sooners.
“Knew that was coming, but no,” Riley said. “Not right now. To sit here and answer these questions, I always want to be truthful. The truth is, for me, I love Oklahoma. I love coaching here. I love coaching college football. I certainly don’t have that itch right now.”
The 35-year-old has been the Sooners head coach for the past two seasons, replacing long-time head coach Bob Stoops. Prior to that, he spent two seasons as the Sooners offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.
Mayfield and Riley joined the Sooners for the 2015 season. The two worked together to help Mayfield win the 2017 Heisman Trophy.
He also was named the Associated Press Player of the Year in 2017 under Riley’s tutelage. He also won the Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, and the Davey O’Brien Award in 2017, as well.
With the Sooners, Riley is 19-3. He is also 12-2 within the Big 12 Conference.
The team lost 54-48 to the Georgia Bulldogs in the Rose Bowl on January 1st, 2018. The win allowed the Bulldogs to advance to the College Football Playoff National Championship game against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
In his last game with Riley, Mayfield went 23 of 35 for 287 yards. He also had two touchdowns and an interception.
Recently, college football coaches have not transitioned well to the NFL. In two seasons, Nick Saban went 15-17 with the Miami Dolphins during the 20005 and 2006 seasons.
Bobby Petrino spent just 13 games with the Atlanta Falcons before accepting the Arkansas Razorbacks head coaching job. He went 3-10 with the Falcons.
Legendary college football head coach Steve Spurrier spent just two seasons in the NFL. He went 12-20 in 32 games with the Washington Redskins.
Pete Carroll is the only head coach of the previous college football coaches to have success in the NFL after making the switch. The 67-year-old has been the Seahawks head coach since the 2010 season.
He is 83-51-1 as the Seahawks leader. He also guided the team to two Super Bowl appearances. In 2013, the team defeated the Denver Broncos 43-8 in the first-ever cold weather Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
