Jim Boylan, a former assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers, did not have his option picked up following the end of the 2017-18 season. Boylan filed a lawsuit, according to ESPN, against the team on Thursday as he alleges age discrimination.

Boylan is 63 years old and provided a transcript of a voicemail left by former head coach Tyronn Lue, which informed him that the team would be “moving in a different direction.” The team fired Lue on Sunday after a 0-6 start.

In the transcription, Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman “[informed Lue that] they’re not going to pay that kind of money for three assists on the bench. He wants to go younger in that position, and you know, find somebody who’s a grinder and younger in that position.”

Altman allegedly told Boylan that they would want a younger assistant coach. Following his exit, the team hired Terry Nooner in the same role.

Nooner was friends with Lue. He was hired as the team’s Player Development Coach/Assistant Coach.

Before being hired by the Cavaliers, he worked three seasons with Brenda Freese’s staff with the Maryland Terrapins.

Lue and Nooner were Raytown High School teammates. In addition, Lue was also a client of Nooner’s when he was a personal instructor from 2006 through 2011.

Boylan is suing Altman and Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert. Lue is not part of the lawsuit.

The team has already called Boylan’s lawsuit a “shameless cash grab.”

“The outrageousness of Mr. Boylan’s claim of ‘age discrimination’ due to the Cavaliers not exercising an option in a contract both parties signed cannot be overstated,” the Cavaliers said in the statement. “The only fact that exceeds the egregiousness of Mr. Boylan’s claim that he is owed any further compensation from the Cavaliers is the extortion attempts by [Boylan attorney] Christopher Thorman demanding $6.174 million when, had the one-year option been exercised for the 2018-2019 season, Mr. Boylan would have been paid $500,000 for his services.”

Boylan joined the Cavaliers coaching staff in 2013, first working with Mike Brown, then David Blatt. Lue was then hired to replace Blatt.
