Reds minor leaguer dies in car accident

Cincinnati Reds minor league pitcher Jairo Capellan was killed in a car accident early Saturday morning. He was killed in the Dominican Republic.

Capellan was the only death from the accident. However, minor leaguers Raul Hernandez and Emilio Garcia were also injured in the crash.

Hernandez is reportedly in critical condition, while Garcia is in stable condition.

“We received this terrible news and send our condolences and support to the families, friends, and teammates of Jairo, Raul, and Emilio,” Reds CEO Bob Castellini said in a statement. “Our Dominican operations are an integral part of the Reds organization, and this tragedy affects us all. We will remain closely involved to help everyone through this difficult time.

The three players were all 19-years-old. All three players are from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Capellan spent his first season in organized baseball in 2018. He went 2-3 with a 6.25 ERA in 18 games, including three games finished, with the Dominican Summer League Reds. He allowed 26 runs (22 earned runs), including two home runs, in 31 2/3 innings. He also struck out 39 batters and walked 26.

Hernandez has spent the past two seasons with the Reds, both with the DSL Reds. He went 2-4 with a 2.29 ERA in 14 games, including 13 starts. He allowed 23 runs (13 earned runs), including one home run, in 51 innings, while striking out 77 and walking 22.

Garica spent his first season with the DSL Reds in 2018. He had a .205 batting average with 11 RBIs in 35 hits over 47 games. He also had seven doubles and one triple.
