Former College Football player Devon Johnson dies

Former College Football player Devon Johnson died suddenly on Tuesday, according to media reports. He was 25.

The Herald-Dispatch is reporting that he died from an undisclosed cause after being transported to Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, West Virginia. This is the second former player, who has ties to the NFL, who has died in the past three days.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars offensive lineman Vince Manuwai passed away on Sunday.

“I am shocked and saddened at the news of Devon Johnson’s passing,” Thundering Herd head coach John “Doc” Holliday said on Tuesday night in a statement. “Devon was a force in our program, both literally and figuratively. “Whether on the field or off, his impact was immeasurable and he will be missed by so many at Marshall. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.”

Johnson never played in an NFL game. However, he bounced around with the Carolina Panthers after going undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft. He signed with the Panthers on May 13th, 2016. Several months later, he was released by the Panthers on August 18th, 2016.

One day later, the Panthers placed Johnson on injured reserve. On May 2nd, he was again waived by the Panthers. One day later, he was officially cut by the team.

“Devon was an incredible football player, but an even better person,” Johnson’s family said in a statement, according to The Athletic’s Joe Person. “He forged and treasured relationships from childhood, to his success as a member of the Marshall Thundering Herd, to his time spent in the Carolina Panthers organization, and beyond. “Devon will always be in our hearts, and we sincerely appreciate the outpouring of support, thoughts, and respects.”
