Greenville’s Jeremiah Williams taken off of ventilator, dies

High School football player Jeremiah Williams has died days after breaking his neck in a football game. The Greenville High School (Greenville, Mississippi) football player was injured when he attempted to tackle a player during the November 2nd contest, according to WJTV.

Williams, who was a defensive back, broke the C1 and C4 vertebrae in his neck when he attempted to make the tackle. The Greenville High School Hornets player was then transported to a local hospital.

After nearly a week in the hospital, he was then taken off of the ventilator. He died a short time later, according to WAPT.

WAPT is reporting that Jon Rea, who is a relative of a player from the Madison Central football team, was at the game. Rea told the TV station that the communities ‘rallied and prayed around Jeremiah that night.’

“After a lot of thoughtful prayer and consideration, I woke up Saturday morning thinking the same thing, and it just hit me: GoFundMe,” Rea said.

At press time, 75 donations raised more than $38,100.

The Greenville football team ended their season with a 1-10 record. They were 0-7 within the District, according to MaxPreps.com.

The team ended their season on a 10-game losing streak. They won their season-opener 29-19 against the Gentry Rams on August 18th.

The Madison Central Jaguars won 6-0 on November 2nd in the game that Williams was hurt.
