The Baltimore Orioles have hired Mike Elias as their new general manager. He comes to Baltimore, Maryland from Houston, Texas, where he worked for the Houston Astros. He replaces Dan Duquette, who did not have his contract renewed.

While with the Astros, he oversaw the team’s player development and amateur scouting. The news was first reported by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

He was one of Astros GM Jeff Luhnow’s two assistant general managers. Brandon Taubman did not receive the title of Assistant GM until September.

Taubman has been responsible for pro scouting and baseball administrative functions since his promotion.

The Orioles’ general manager search has been highly secrecy, as they attempted to avoid leaks to the media. The search was led by John and Louis Angelos.

Among the reported candidates were former Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti, former Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington, Philadelphia Phillies assistant Ned Rice — who previously worked with the Orioles, and Kansas City Royals assistant Scott Sharp. Other candidates included MLB Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations Peter Woodfork, and former Pittsburgh Pirates executive Tyrone Brooks, who is presently the MLB Senior Director of the Front Office and Field Staff Diversity Pipeline Program.

Cherington is presently the Vice President of Baseball Operations for the Toronto Blue Jays. Colletti is presently a broadcast analyst. Rice is the Phillies’ Assistant GM under GM Matt Klentak.

Sharp is the Royals’ Vice President and Assistant General Manager. Woodfork previously served as Vice President and Assistant General Manager with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He also worked for several years within the Red Sox organization.

Brooks had been with the Pirates since 2009 before joining MLB in 2016. He was first the Pirates’ Director of Baseball Operations before being promoted to Director of Player Personnel.

He worked with the Cleveland Indians and the Atlanta Braves after beginning his career in Atlanta in 1996.

Elias is 36 years old and joined the Astros in 2011 after working with the St. Louis Cardinals. He became the team’s Assistant General Manager in August 2016 and was responsible for the domestic and international scouting departments.

He helped the team draft Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa — two key pieces of the Astros 2017 World Series Championship.

Elias began his career as a scout with the Cardinals in 2007. He then became the team’s Director of Amateur Scouting in 2010.
