Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving said he wears the No. 11 jersey because of his father. Irving has worn the No. 11 for the past two seasons.
He made the switch to this jersey number after wearing No. 2 with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
“My dad is the reason I wear 11,” Irving said on Instagram. “I want to be the reason no one else will.”

Drederick Irving wore the No. 11 with the Boston University team. He was one of the school’s most prolific scorers.
He played at the school from 1984 through 1988. His No. 11 jersey was retired by the school in 1988.
The elder Irving is also a member of the Boston University Athletic Hall of Fame.
In the new ad, which came after Thanksgiving, shows the elder Irving and his son playing one-on-one in the one-minute clip. It shows how thankful he is for his father in the piece.
The elder Irving played not far from the TD Garden. He never made it to the league despite having a tryout with the Celtics in 1992.
Following the death of his mother Elizabeth, Irving was raised by his father, who also raised Irving’s sister, as well.

In 122 games in his Boston University career, he made 61 starts, according to Sports Reference. He averaged 15.8 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.1 blocks in 32.6 minutes per game.
