According to The Athletic, the Philadelphia Phillies were interested in acquiring Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. The reported package centered around pitcher Zach Eflin, according to Jayson Stark.

Stark also said the initial talks were about Eflin and prospects. The Phillies — who are reportedly the front-runners for Bryce Harper — wanted to try to dump first baseman Carlos Santana on the Diamondbacks.

That’s when the talks broke off when Santana was offered. According to Spotrac, Santana has two years left with $34.5 million. He also has a 2021 club option for $17.5 million, or a $500,000 buyout.

The Diamondbacks have made it known that they are interested in trading away Goldschmidt. The New York Yankees have been mentioned as a place for him to land.

Luke Voigt is the team’s first baseman at the moment. The Yankees have even been mentioned as a candidate for Harper if he played first base.

The 31-year-old Wilmington, Delaware native had a .290 batting average this season. He also had 33 home runs and 83 RBIs.

In his career, he has had a .297 batting average. He also has 209 home runs and 710 RBIs.

Goldschmidt has one year left on his contract. He is due to make $14.5 million in 2019.

It is believed that the Phillies will move Rhys Hoskins back to first base. That would leave no place for Santana to play, who signed a three-year, $60 million deal in the 2017 off-season.

If they somehow was able to acquire Goldschmidt, Hoskins would remain in the outfield.
