Fleet select QB Johnson as top pick

The San Diego Fleet selected Josh Johnson with the No. 1 overall pick in the quarterback in the “Protect or Pick” Draft on Tuesday night. The Fleet received the top pick following a random draw.

The 32-year-old Oakland, California native has not played in a game in organized football since the 2014 season with the San Francisco 49ers. Johnson appeared in just one game that season.

He also appeared in games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, and Cincinnati Bengals. He spent the first three seasons of his career with the Buccaneers.

He went 0-5 as a starter with the Buccaneers in the NFL. He appeared in 29 games and went 96 of 177 for 1,042 passing yards. He also had five touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Johnson was the Buccaneers fifth-round draft pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

From 2004 through 2007, he was the San Diego Toreros quarterback. He went 724 of 1,065 for 9,699 yards. He also had 113 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

He also had 307 carries for 1,864 yards and an additional 19 touchdowns.

The Alliance of American Football is slated to make its debut in February 2019. The season is slated to kick off one week after Super Bowl LIII.

There are only eight teams, all in the South, Midwest or West Coast. The Fleet will play their games at SDCCU Stadium in San Diego, California.

The team is also the only franchise at this time in California. Mike Martz is the team’s head coach.
