Houston Cougars offensive coordinator Kendal Briles is no longer in the mix to become the Texas State Bobcats head coach. Everett Withers was let go at the end of the season.
Briles was being mentioned as the top candidate early in the process. The school has now turned their attention to West Virginia Mountaineers offensive coordinator Jake Spavital.
The 33-year-old Tulsa, Oklahoma native has been the Mountaineers offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the past two seasons. Prior to arriving in Morgantown, West Virginia, he was the California Bears offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2016.
Spavital has previous experience coaching in Texas. He was the Texas A&M Aggies offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2014 and 2015.
He also spent the 2013 season as the Aggies co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
He also was the Mountaineers quarterbacks coach in 2011 and 2012. He also was an Oklahoma State Cowboys graduate assistant in 2010.
Spavital also was a graduate assistant with the Houston Cougars in 2009. He began his coaching career as an offensive quality control coach with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in 2008.
