The Carolina Hurricanes have placed goaltender Scott Darling on waivers. The team also placed forward Valentin Zykov on waivers for the purpose of reassignment.

The 29-year-old Newport News, Virginia native appeared in seven games this season. He went 2-4-1 in those games.

He had an .892 save percentage. He also had a 3.14 goals against average.

“It just doesn’t make any sense to have three goalies and the other two deserve to be here right now,” general manager Don Waddell said Thursday. “It’s clear he’s the third guy. Whether I’m paying him to play for Carolina or paying him to play in Charlotte, I’d rather have him playing in case something happens and we need a goalie.

“These decisions are not made easily. There’s a business we have to run. We’re in the business to win hockey games. Contracts are contracts but when it comes to wins and losses you can’t put a dollar value on it.”

Darling was acquired in a trade to the Hurricanes from the Chicago Blackhawks on April 28th, 2017. The Blackhawks received a third-round draft pick in 2017 NHL Draft.

In his final game with the team, he allowed four games against the New York Islanders on Saturday. He faced 19 shots in the game.

If Darling is not claimed off waivers, he will then be reassigned to the Hurricanes’ American Hockey League team. He has a $4.15 million salary.

Without Darling, the Hurricanes will rely on Curtis McElhinney and Petr Mrázek.

The 23-year-old Zykov has just one assist in 13 games this season.
